We prefer the one without the handle.
We grate into the plastic cover which is less messy and more efficient in getting every last bit of zest. We wonder how we ever got along without it. Our 7 grandchildren all use it too and we have zest or grated something in almost everything they eat when they visit.
I original purchased ours for my husband for Christmas - he is the cook and we have many gadgets. When I tried to buy one for my brother - who is learning to cook after retiring, and one of my sisters - who also enjoys culinary participation - I could not find one without the handle - so I contacted Microplane on line. An absolutely great product. I will visit you again when it is time to find a special gift for friends or family.
And, you apparently have a customer service friendly customer service. What a novelty!

Wife loves it. I'm using on fresh nutmeg for breakfast mufffins from whole grain freshly ground wheat. Boy are they good.
